Jan's Literacy Program

Jan's Paperbacks Literacy Program includes 3 programs:

  1. $30 free used books once annually to any public school teacher for classroom library books
  2. Reduced price used books for any public school teacher once they have used their $30 in free books
  3. A donation (new books or cash) program to donate new books to public school libraries

1. Free Used Book Teacher Fund

Mission: To supply classroom books to local public school teachers at no cost to them.

Jan’s Paperbacks Teacher Fund is fully funded by generous customers who donate their credit so that, once annually, any local public school teacher can have access to $30 in FREE used books to be used in their classroom libraries.

The program’s sustainability is dependent on the support of the community, teachers, customers and students.  By ordering books through us, shopping in-store and trading gently used books, the Jan’s Paperbacks Literacy Program is able to continue its support of early reading.

To Give: Bring gently used, good condition, books to Jan’s Paperbacks to be traded for in-store credit and ask that the credit be added to the “Teacher Fund” account.

To Receive:  If you are a public school teacher, you are eligible for $30 in FREE used books once every school year.  The fund can be used at any time throughout the year.  Please show your school identification at the desk and let us know you would like to use the teacher fund.  Restrictions apply.

Due to high demand, the following titles/authors are not eligible for the Teacher Fund free books, but can be purchased using ½ teacher fund credit and ½ cash:

  • Dork Diaries series by Rachel Renee Russell
  • Harry Potter series by JK Rowling
  • Middle School series by James Patterson
  • I, Funny series by James Patterson
  • House of Robots series by James Patterson
  • Jacky Ha-Ha series by James Patterson
  • Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney
  • Any title by Rick Riordan
  • Any title by Sherman Alexie
  • Any title by John Green

2. Reduced Price Used Books

Once a teacher has used their $30 if free used books, Jan's offers in-store credit to any public school teacher for the purchase of classroom books.  This credit has been donated by generous Jan's Paperbacks customers.  With the credit, teachers will only need to pay 1/4 the cover price for any used book.

To Give: Bring gently used, good condition, books to Jan’s Paperbacks to be traded for in-store credit and ask that the credit be added to the “Teacher Fund” account.

To Receive:  If you are a public school teacher, you are eligible to use this credit once every school year. Please show your school identification at the desk and let us know you would like to use the teacher fund.  Restrictions apply.

3. New Books for Public School Libraries

Jan's Paperbacks Literacy Program is accepting new book or cash donations (used to purchase new books) for local public school libraries.  Jan's has teamed up with several local schools to find out what books they need in their libraries that they may not have the funding for.  These ususally include popular fiction titles.  2-4 times a year, Jan's will deliver any books donated, or purchased with donated money, to each school.

To Give: Check out 'Wish Lists' in-store and purchase titles from the list.  Jan's will delivery your donation to the school.  Or, drop money in the collection jar on the counter.  Jan's will combine that money and purchase books on behalf of the program and deliver them to the schools.

To Receive: If you are a public school teacher or librarian, contact us and let us know what books you need in your library.
