COVID-19 Status Update
Not promising to update daily, but will make sure any large changes are updated.
Update as of 5/24 - Yes, we are still open. Rules: Only 1 browsing person/group at a time. If you arrive together you may browse together. Because you will be alone in the store, I am not requiring masks. You make your own choices on masks, gloves, etc.
If you touch anything, please put it on the table in front so it can be re-sanitized before it is re-shelved.
We are doing our absolute best to ensure you have a safe, healthy shopping environment. Please help us keep it safe for everyone else by not coming to the store if you have any concerns about your health.
Here is the portion of the new city mandate that deals with retail:
"This distinction from closing all businesses except for those categorized as essential as mandated in other states, aims to minimize unintended consequences and add clarity for businesses who can adjust their business models to accommodate vital social distancing measures."
"Retail businesses closed by Executive Order 20-12 include:
Shopping: Outdoor and indoor malls and retail complexes, although individual types of businesses not subject to the measures may stay open."
"Other retail businesses will not be able to continue to operate unless they can implement strict social distancing measures and designate an employee or officer charged with ensuring compliance. Retail businesses able to adapt to take-out style shopping experiences can also remain open."
Jan’s is an independently owned bookstore specializing in selling and trading paperback books. Jan's opened in 1981 in Aloha, Oregon, a suburb on the west side of Portland. In 2018, Jan's moved to Downtown Beaverton.
With a passion for books, Jan C. first opened the store in March 1981. With bookcases built by her husband and index cards to keep track of customers' credit, the store flourished through the 1980s and 1990s. Jan was ready for a change in 2000 and sold the store to longtime customer and employee, Debbie.
Debbie spent the next 18 years upgrading and growing Jan's, bringing in a computerized records system and remodeling the store. In 2018, it was time for Debbie to move on to the next chapter of her life, selling the store to longtime customer, Lori.
After 37 years in Aloha, Jan's lost their lease and needed to move. At the same time as Lori taking over the store, it was time to find a new location and move 37 years of history. The summer of 2018 is one that will never be forgotten.
Jan's prides itself on supporting the local community and authors. We love our authors, supporting authors by holding events allowing readers and authors to meet and mingle. Jan's looks forward to the many exciting opportunities for future community events in Downtown Beaverton.
